Do’s and Don’ts of prepping for your shoot!

The do’s and Do nots of getting ready for your boudoir shoot. Tips for looking and feeling your best!

When it comes to getting ready for your boudoir shoot there are always so many questions as to what you should be doing in the weeks leading up to your shoot. So iv compiled this list to hopefully help you out!

DON’T: GET A TAN

Tan lines are the enemy, the Bane of my existence! They are embarrassingly      noticeable and hard if not impossible to edit out. Same goes for spray tans they rub off and leave awkward patches that you just don’t want. Tanning lotion is streaky and leaves your skin orange.

Do: SELF CARE

Exfoliate and hydrate your skin, if you plan to shave or wax please do so 3 days to a week before your shoot to avoid irritated or broken out skin.

Don’t: MAKE DRASTIC CHANGES

Look we all want to get Fringe bangs, or go platinum blond, but PLEASE  just wait till after your shoot on the off chance that something goes wrong our you don’t love the new look, its not something you know have to fix for your shoot.  Same goes for skin care please don’t switch soaps, or skin care routines just days before a shoot.

Do: PAMPER YOURSELF

Get your roots touched up, tone your blonde hair or get a blow out, even do a test run on the make up look you want for your shoot. And go ahead and get those nails done too!

Don’t: CRASH DIET

This boudoir shoot is in celebration of your body, how it is. Continue to nourish your body properly with good fats and lots of water!

DO: follow some body positive influencers on Insta, and TikTok.

Get Inspo for your shoot, from people who have similar bodies as you!

Don’t: WEAR A BRA

Skip the bra and any other tight clothes on the morning of your shoot. They cause marks and redness on the skin.

Do: COME COMFY

Sweats and t-shirts are welcome!

Don’t: STRESS/ OVERTHINK

Take a few deep breaths and trust the process!

Do: GO SHOPPING!

Boudoir is a luxury experience and your deserve the best! Get all the lingerie, jewelry and heels too!

Styling and posing for a masculine presenting boudoir shoot!

Quick tips on styling masculine presenting people for boudoir shoots

When we as a societ think of boudoir we tend to see an image of a person who fits the mold of “traditonlly beautiful”  This post is NOT about that! We are talking about how to style your self when you are a Masc presenting and non binary person.

Honestly styling yourself or picking out outfits for your boudoir shoot is easier  than you might think you just need to run through a few things. Your style preference, how much skin your willing to show and posing.

First lets talk about your every day style. What do you normally wear? 3 peice suit, slacks and a dress shirts. Or are you more relaxed in blue jeans and tee shirts, or mabe you like to dress in athleaser type clothes.  A good rule of thumb is to take your every day style and  take off a layer or two.

First Example Suits: remove the coat, unbutton or remove the shirt and leave the chest exposed this leaves you with a modestly styled look that leaves us thirsting for more!

Second example blue jean and tees:

Lets face it jeans and tees are already sexy to start with but when you tug at the hem of the shirt and expose the tummy just a little(or alot) it makes the heart skip a beat! If you know you know!!

Example 3: active wear ok so maybe your a sweatpants type of person well thats simple grab your favorite  pair of sweats  and sports bra I(f you wear one) and sit on back . Also if your comfortable don’t be afraid to show off a little more!

How much skin are you comfortable showing? Some clients feel thier best in the most modest of looks, while others are willing to bare it all. Every client is diffrent and I will always ask what you what your comfort level is I do my best not to push.

Posing! Now while all photographers have their own go to posing, you can always voice what you want poses to look like ahead of time!

The key to posing masculin presenting people is for the subject to take up space! Basiclly the opposite of how we are told “Ladies should sit” .

Open your legs sit forword with elbows on your legs and chin on your hands

Rest ankle on opposite knee lean back in seat and rest arms across the back of seat

Rember to open up your chest and put your shoulders back.

These are all just examples and there are a ton more possible styles out there the sky is that limit!

Where to display your boudoir photos that won’t shock your mom!

Where to display your boudoir photos so they are seen everyday, but still kept private from visitors!

You did it! You finally did it! You went through the whole process of booking a boudoir shoot, and now you just left your ordering appointment and  your absolutely loved your images like your cant even believe thats you in those photos, and cant stop staring at them love them! Also if you’re like me you probably went all out on your order.  Large 12 x12 acrylic cover album, and canvas or even metal wall art!

But now your probably  wondering where to hang these large intimate photos in your home without giving mom or grandma a shock when the stop in for a visit! Well, lucky for you I have some ideas!

The Bedroom

This to me seems like the most obvious place. Boudoir literally means “Woman's Bedroom”and the bedroom is “where the magic happens” right?

For the most part our bedrooms are a private area, not just anybody will waltz right in, so that keeps your photos private, but still seen every day. It really is a perfect place to display your Boudoir photos, so you ( and your partner) will have a daily reminder that you are a total babe!

Master Closet

Now if you're out here in the world living in my dream home you probably have a decent walk in closet, with lots of bare walls!  And honestly  picking  clothes every morning takes its toll some times you don't like the way things or fitting, or maybe you were a uniform or scrubs everyday and tire of not seeing your self in any other clothes. Well, Having a beautiful metal print hanging in your closet will serve as an everyday pick me up while also keeping your images away from prying eyes.

Master Bathroom

Again I am hoping you're out here living your best life in my dream home! How many people outside of you and your partner really use the master bath? A canvas hung over the bath tub is a perfect placement for your gorgeous detail, or back shots.

The “Man Cave”

Wall art makes a great gift for your partner to hang in there space. Now the privacy of this specific room will probably depend on your partner and how often they have people in the “Man Cave” so definitely  keep that in mind when making your photo selection for this room. What are you comfortable with your partners Buddies seeing?

I Did The Shoot!

As a Boudoir Photographer I thought it important to experience a boudoir shoot on the other side of the camera….it was interesting!

*All photos in this article works from "Infinite Photography and Film" Thank you Sayidah for working with me, and making me feel amazing in the process!

After deciding to jump head first into boudoir I wanted a was to  empathize with my clients and how vulnerable they feel when the come to me. So I hopped online to look for a fellow boudoir photographer.

After looking around I landed on at infinite photography and film.  Her specialty is weddings but she takes on boudoir and seniors in her off season. We talked about the style I was wanting, and picked a date.

I had a couple of months between booking and the day of my actual shoot; so I had TONS of time to panic and feel awful about how my body looks after having 3 babies.  I contemplated the dreaded crash diet but I pride myself on loving and respecting your body at every size and stage; and I never want my kids to see me starving myself, or hear me speak negatively  about my body.

So I did my best to make better eating choices and take care of myself. I ordered my body suits from torrid, used a couple of pieces I already had to make a third set; and order some heels from amazon. Then a week before my shoot I pinched a nerve in my neck, I spent the whole seven days at doctors, chiropractors, and physical therapists offices. The pain was awful and but I managed to have *almost* full range of motion back in my neck by the next week.

DAY OF SHOOT

I packed up my clothes and headed for town, I met Sayidah in her beautiful Home, where she did my hair and make up herself.  I loved the look and I even wore fake lashes for the first time! We spent the morning just chatting and getting to know each other.  Then we took off across town to an old down town loft studio with beautiful factory windows, and exposed brick I was in love with the space!

As nervous as I was to have my body on display. I just reminded myself that my swim suits actually show more than the outfits I chose, and I channeled the part of myself  that is full body positivity, self love, and confidence. Sayiada was great at giving direction, and an awesome hype woman through the whole process;  and I did my best to follow her direction with my stiff neck.

By the end of the shoot I was feeling good, and felt pretty confident and I was excited to see the results.

THE REVEAL

So the reveal came a few months later in May, in the form of an email. I opened up the digital gallery and immediately the little negative voice in my head started pointing out all the things I didn't like about my body, and I wanted to cry I felt terrible about them. So I closed my laptop, and reminded myself that my size is in NO WAY tied to my worth, I reminded myself that I have grown and birthed three babies with this body, and I was still nourishing my youngest with this body!

So I sent the link to my husband and called him so we could look through them together. Hearing him say that he loved them definitely made me feel better, and I was able to give them a second chance. I looked at them with fresh eyes and focused on the things that Like. I realized then that even if I wasn't happy with the current state of my body it was still beautiful, it was still capable of amazing things.

What would I change?

Nothing, I needed to go through this experience  and see myself as sexy, and beautiful at my current size. I did learn that I really am not happy with my current body shape and I will be making some changes to improve my mental and physical health.  I still want my future clients to know that you do not need to lose weight or alter your body to do a boudoir shoot. And the choice to lose weight is personal and you should never feel pressure to do so if your are not ready to embark on that journey.

Picking the right photographer

Red and Green flags to look for when booking a boudoir Photographer!

Not every Tom, Dick and Harry with a camera is necessarily a Professional  photographer; so let’s go through red AND green flags, to look for while picking a boudoir photographer.

Check out their portfolio

First look at their work! Make sure it’s something that vibes with you. Does their portfolio have diversity? Models of different skin colors, body types, age range?

Red flag: a photographer who only has thin/Fit white women in isn’t portfolio probably isn’t going to know how to pose a Plus size woman in a flattering manner. They might not have experience working with people from other cultures.

Green flag! Portfolio that highlights woman of color, Plus size women, and those “of a certain age”, in a flattering manner!

Reach out to the past clients,  that are posted on their instagram, or Facebook and ask about their experiences. If. The Photographer has reliable references they’ll be happy to connect you with them

Red flag: “The pictures turned out good, but I the photographer made odd comments” or “ehh I felt a bit uncomfortable”

Green Flag: “I was nervous going in ,but the Photographer did a great job of making me feel comfortable, and I love my photos!”

You booked a photoshoot! Now what?

Ok great you found and are booked with someone  you feel is a good fit. What should communications look like moving forward?

Red flags: asking for inappropriate photos! Your Photographer Should never ask you to send them photos. NEVER SEND SUGGESTIVE OR NUDE PHOTOS OF YOURSELF. Doesn’t allow you to bring a support friend.

Green flag! Open communication, your Photographer  should be open to answering your questions in the weeks and days leading up to your shoot.  They should also be sending your any and all information you need leading up to the shoot.

Day of shoot!!

Hopefully if you have made it this far your have chosen a great photographer who acts and runs their business in a professional manner. But just incase here a few more flags to be on the look out for!

Red flag: Flirts with you, comments on your body, Pressures you to pose topless or nude. Touches you without your consent.

Green flag: asks what your boundaries are, respect when you say no to posing nude or topless. Hypes you up and makes your feel safe and comfortable!

Examples :

Acceptable - “You look awesome!” “Girl you are killing it!”  “You’re going to love these”

Unacceptable- “your body is______”. “The things I would do”

when you meet your photographer, they should make you feel comfortable , and at ease. If they give you any strange vibe or make you feel uncomfortable at all just get out, better to be safe than sorry.

Do I Need to Lose Weight Before I Book a Boudoir Shoot?

Here is why you absolutely DO NOT need to lose weight to do a boudoir shoot!

There seems to be an idea of what a person needs to look like in order to do a boudoir shoot. A few people have told me they need to loose weight before booking a shoot or they don’t think they can do a boudoir shoot at all because they arent “real” models. So lets touch on a few things…

First, ANYONE can do a boudoir shoot. Tall or short, Plus size or straight size, mom of 3+ kids, or a woman with no kids. Hell men too, Trans people, gay or straight; the list goes on!! I am here to help you feel comfortable in your own skin. I do that by helping you relax, coaching you through poses, sets and making the process fun and care free.

Two, you are already sexy and beautiful. Society has taught woman to stand in a mirror and pick ourselves apart from the hair on our heads the size of our shoulders, arms, blah blah blah!  But my job as your Boudoir Photographer is to look at you with no judgment, no negativity and capture your beauty on camera so you can see what I see.

Three, your can always book another shoot in 6 months, 1 year, or 2 years; after you have taken on a health and fitness journey. This gives you the  unique opportunity to celebrate your body at two very different phases in your life, and love your body at both of them.

So in short, no. No you don’t have to lose weight before booking your boudoir shoot. I personally and Professionally  would never advise a client to put off  such an amazing experience like boudoir, for somthings as superficial as weight. Its so important to remember that our bodies are amazing, Magical vessiles, that are capible of more than we relize. We need ro remember to respect and try to love them in every chapter of life.

FOUR THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE YOU SIGN A MODEL RELEASE

Here is what you need to know when deciding weather or not you are going to sign a model release for your boudoir photo shoot.

Have you ever been scrolling through a photographers Boudoir work, totally swooning over the portraits and suddenly think, “Will my photos be in here too?” Or “Gosh how do I make the cut?”

Well the answers are “You totally make the cut!” And ‘Absolutely your photos will be there.” As long as you sign a little piece of paper called a “Model Release”.  Now if your not familiar with the term, don’t worry I am going to break it down for you!

I am going to walk you through what a Model release is, where and how photos will be used, and who will be able to see them.

First, what is a Model release? Well its basically a permission slip, that states you are giving the photographer permission to use the photos from your Boudoir session publicly. *this is important to remember and really consider moving forward.

Okay now lets assume you have agreed and signed the Model release, where will the photos be posted? And how will the be used? Your photographer now has permission to use the photos however they see fit. Most likely they will post these photos on there website, in there portfolio, in their VIP groups; and even ads. Advertisements are usually run on platforms like Google, Facebook, and Instagram.

So, your photos are out there, who can see them? Remember this is the Internet, and anyone who has a smart phone and wifi could Potential see your photos: mom, grandma, boss, or Mrs.Moris from down the street. While this is probably who your photographer wants to Market themselves to; it may not be who you want seeing you in your sultry lingerie.

You may also want to talk to your photographer about the possibility of pulling your photos down at a later time. Some Photographers may be totally ok with you with drawing your consent later, others might not. So ask them about their polices and make sure you fully understand the polices and are comfortable with them.

Now if at the end of this you have decided to sign the model release and are comfortable with your images out in the world. I want you to know that you are the real M.V.P.! I always get so witty  when a client is so in love with their images that the want to share them with future clients.

Six Reasons to Book a Boudoir Shoot!

We do much for the people around us, here are 6 reasons to do this for your self!

I Have personally felt the toll life takes at on a woman at many different stages. I have been a stay at home mom, a college student, a dental assistant, a sales associate, and now even a small business owner; all while balancing being a mother of three kids and a wife(Thank the Gods for supportive spouses).  Our lives revolve around everybody else. Wake up, feed the kids, get them to school,  work, come home do the dishes, cook dinner, help the kids with homework, drive them to practice, and games, get the kids bathed and in bed just to start it over the next day.  We do everything we can for those we love and tend to put ourselves on the back burner. Isn’t it time we do something for ourselves?

Boudoir is empowering! Really it is; the bravery it takes to be basically nude in front of a camera, and express your sexuality is exhilarating and liberating! And seeing your images later, and seeing how beautiful you are and how your loved ones see you, is inspiring!

An excuse to get pampered! When you book a boudoir shoot hair and make up is (usually) included. Why not just go all out book a mani/Pedi, get a facial, a wax. Make a day of it and go shopping, your going to need some new sexy lingerie for your photoshoot any way! Take your bestie and have some fun!

Boudoir albums and wall art make great gifts for your partner! Our partners get so much joy from seeing us happy and loving ourselves. They also think we are beautiful and sexy in our oversized nighties. So why not go all out? Get the sexy lace set give your best pouty and come hither looks. Surprise The love of your life for your anniversary, their birthday, or just because.  Pro tip: large wall art looks killer in the man cave.

Milestone Birthday… how old are you going to be this year? 30? 40? 50?60?! Guess what, there is no age limit on boudoir! Whether you're just waving good bye to your youth, or ready to welcome grand babies into your life, Boudoir is for you! You have lived so much exciting life, and are full of wisdom. And if anyone knows they’re worth its a woman who as lived so much life.

Break up? Divorce… now to most people these don’t seem like reasons to “celebrate”. But if you know you know. I say this as a girl who attended “divorce parties” as a teenager, because my mother hosted them as way to encourage  her friends to realize that they deserve better in life. So if your relieved to be leaving your relationship and want to celebrate your new found freedom and independence boudoir is a great option!

Celebrate yourself… Did you accomplish something amazing? Graduate college with your bachelors, or masters? Did you Kill it at the gym this year? Beat cancer!?!?  Congratulations!!  Let’s do this thing, Show the world that you are a total badass!!

Whether you are doing a boudoir shoot for your partner or yourself, you are going to have an experience that makes you feel beautiful, and you will have these photos to look at for the rest of your life; and be able to remember how this experience made you feel.

Finding the perfect Lingerie for you.

Finding the best lingerie for your body type!

Hey babes, it’s time to start shopping!

Many women may feel a bit overwhelmed when it comes time to choose the right lingerie. You might have questions, like “what will look best on my body type?”or even “what is my body type.” Well I am here to help you answer your questions!

Are you ready to find the best lingerie for your body?

There are four basic body types.

Apple/rounded: women with this body type cary most of their weight in their midsection. Most apple shaped bodies will have larger tummies and thin legs. The goal for apple shaped bodies is (usually) to draw attention away from the midsection, and accentuate your legs.

Here is how to do this, you don’t need a corset, in fact we don’t need to alter your body shape at all. Corsets will actually be uncomfortable  for women your are not typically curvaceous in the hips.

Instead shop for “teddies” or body suit with a Deep V neck. The V shape will draw eyes toward the breasts and down the middle of the stomach, showing off the goods and distract from areas you would rather go unnoticed. Pair this with some sexy heels, to accentuate your slim legs.

Pear Shape: Woman with a pear shape have a small frame on top usually a smaller bust (but not always), curvy hips and fun booty. When picking lingerie for this body type you'll want to draw attention to your hyper feminine waistband narrow shoulders while also showing off your back as well.

A strapless corset, or bandeau bra will balance your top and bottom halves by giving your top half a wider look and your bum feel more proportional, that being said this is still the age of the “Kardashian booty” and if you want to enhance the size of your bottom instead that is always an option as well.

Rectangle/ Banana shape: A rectangular  shaped body is tall, long and, slim. Women with this shape may feel defeated when it comes to lingerie, finding it hard to flatter parts of the body you feel you may not have, but don’t worry there is something out there for us all! If this is your body type, Try bralett that extends just below your bust. Feel free to get creative with a scalloped lace hems, or other flirty designs.

Hourglass: This body type is fairly self explanatory, curvy hips and bust with a slim waist. Now most lingerie will look great on this body type. We can hype  up the sexy factor with fun accessories like corsets, and suspenders. Bring the attention to your waist, and let your other assets look as large as you like.

There are lingerie options for every body type, just keep these tips in mind while shopping.

Why Boudoir?

The start of it all

Why boudoir?

Well that’s simple…Love.

I have had body image issues most of my life, and after having my first child at 19, those insecurities sky rocketed. I did all the diets, and workout programs, but still didn’t feel comfortable in my body. These feelings continued well into my 20s and after having my 2nd child. I was now 22 and had 2 beautiful little girls and I wanted to do what ever I could to insure that their bodies where never a source of discomfort. I needed to teach them to love themselves, and the only way I could think to do that was to learn to love my own body. I started with simple things, I stoped commenting on my body when they could hear me. I never stepped on the scale with them around. I did my best to treat food as a fuel for my body and not talk about it being good or bad. After a few years of these practices I had developed a neutrality to my body. I didn’t hate my body, but I didn’t love it either. All though this did not meant I didn’t have my frustrations with it from time to time.

Then, in fall of 2019 a store opened in the local mall that did more for my self confidence than any diet or workout ever could. This store had clothes that fit my body, for women with larger or plus size bodies. I spent hours and hundreds of dollars at this store, because I couldn't get over the euphoria I felt of finally being able to walk into a store and know I was going to have a positive experience and walk out with 3 or more items that I would love.

Soon after the opening I began to work at the store. While working in this store it was part of my job to help woman find pieces and outfits. So many times these women would voice how amazing it was to finally have a place to shop that catered to plus size and curvy women. I recall a specific day when a lady came in looking for a dress or an outfit for a wedding. She expressed to me that she despised clothes shopping, and I knew the feeling. I promised todo my my best to make her experience enjoyable. we began touring the store picking out pieces and putting together outfits that we both think she would like and that would flatter her body. She began trying on the outfits and immediately thrilled at how well everything fit her body, how amazing she felt in the pieces we picked out. This woman spent an hour shopping with a smile on her face. When she came up to me to check out, she had tears in her eyes. She thanked me for helping her, find clothes and feel Pretty. I shed a few tears with her, and told her that I was honored to be apart of this experience with her. That was when I knew helping women feel great about them selves was going to be a very large part of my life, one way or another.

A couple of months was later I would lose my job due to the pandemic. I used those week and months to re-adapt to being a stay at home mom, and I love being a SAHM. But as the pandemic dragged on I found myself longing for that interaction. I missed helping people, I missed the feeling of joy I got when somebody told me that I made them feel beautiful. It was like withdrawing form a drug, and I needed another hit(This is a selfish analogy, but hey this is about me!). I started filling my time by photographing my kids, I have always loved photography and its always been a large part of my life. I spent time in Facebook groups sharing photos sessions we had all worked on. I started seeing other photographers post about boudoir, and I became very intrigued. I started to research style and, and find inspiration photos online. A few weeks later I put together a group of women who agreed to model for me, so I could give boudoir a shot and see if I had an eye for it or not. I shared the photos from my first shoot with other photographers. I received tips on how to pose models and use lighting sources. I took those tips and went on to my next three shoots. I eventually had 4 happy models, and I was excited and in love. I am now in the business of helping women love themselves.

-Samara Dillard,

Little Shadow Boudoir.

Prepping for your boudoir shoot!

Boudoir is all about feeling pampered and empowered, Let me take the stress out of getting prepared.

Boudoir is all about, treating, pampering, and being empowered. I know first hand how absolutely exciting and terrifying it can be getting ready for your shoot.

“What do I need to bring?”

“What do I need to do before hand?”

Its all so over whelming, I know!

Don’t worry babe, I’m here to guide your through!

What to bring?

Outfits/Lingerie

Finding the perfect lingerie can be intimidating. Start in your closet what do you have that you all ready love, and feel amazing in.

Now its time to go shopping! In store online whatever you're comfortable with. Once your have 3-4 pieces you love  bring them and together we will figure out what is the best of the best.

Accessories
When it comes to accessories, apply the KISS (Keep It Simple Silly). A string of pearls (costume jewelry is fine) some thigh high stockings, a pair of heels.

Water and a light snack.

Sometimes poses and lights and become tiresome be sure to bring a bottle of water and something light to to eat. Staying properly Hydrated is always important.

Prepping your body

Hydrate

In the weeks and days leading up to your shoot, up your water intake. Try for a a gallon a day. Proper Hydration has many benefits like fighting bloating, that can make you feel sluggish. Give you energy an help with digestion. Drinking water will also help clear your complexion and give your skin a healthy beautiful glow.

Skin care

If you already have a skin care routine that you are satisfied with, don’t change too much. Add a moisturizer if you do not have one already, apply each morning and night after washing your face.

About a week or so before your photoshoot I would recommend exfoliating your skin and body, ridding your self of any unwanted dead skin.

Be sure to also use a good moisturizer on your body, to help with that healthy glow.

What to avoid?

Stay away from any spray tans and tanning lotions, I don’t care how natural the label says they are, they will turn your skin some awful shade of orange, that will be impossible to edit later!

Sun bathing/ tanning beds, please don’t do this either we don’t want any funky tan lines, or sun burns!

Also avoid trying any new skincare products, your don’t want to be mid breakout when your shoot comes around.

1-2days before shoot

Time for a wax and/or shave. To insure your skin is silky smooth be sure to make time to either shave or wax in the days before your shoot, and  lotion up that skin.

Get that Mani/Pedi!

If your like me and are a nail biter, or you work with your hands or do a ton of walking, hiking or what have you; then this is a MUST you want every part of your to look beautiful and a janky nail or cracking heal can most definitely distract from that goal.

When you get your nails done, stay away from bright colors (I know its hard I love them too!). A nice neutral or nude color nail or even a French tip is going to give you an absolutely timeless touch.

Hair and Makeup

I highly, HIGHLY recommend having your hair and make up professionally done. You will save yourself so much headache, and time. (In the future I will include this in my packages)

Your HAMU artist will be able to give you the best look based on your skin tone, face shape, and their own over all learned skills. Be sure to set up an appointment  a few weeks in advance, some artist like to do a trial run.

Hair and make up artist can be found at most of your local salons you'll just need to call around and find a good fit for you. Sephora and Ulta beauty also offer these services.

I really hope this helps with your boudoir adventure!!
